Biography
Philip Herbert studied music education at King Alfred"s College, Winchester and later read music at postgraduate level at Andrew"s University, Michigan, USA. As an external student he gained piano teaching and piano performing diplomas from the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music respectively. He studied the piano with such teachers as Diana Owen, John Owings, Dr John Foster and Irene Ingram. In addition he also received coaching from Kendall Taylor CBE and Guy Johnson. He also studied choral conducting with the late Simon Johnson.
Through a fascination with musicology, Philip has taken a multi-disciplinary approach to making music through composing, performing as an accompanist and conductor. He has also taken a progressive approach in developing projects with high profile musicians that enabled adults and young people to have interactive access to music making, via an eclectic range of musical cultures, genres, and experiences in Leicester.
Philip has performed in a number of contexts, including in the presence of dignitaries and has been involved in a number of projects that have been broadcast on Radio 2 and 3, also BBC TV.
Philip has contributed biographical information on Black composers, in the New Oxford Companion to Black British history that is shortly to be published. He has also written articles for publication on various aspects of music and read papers at academic conferences. He has recently been invited to be an Executive Board member for Eastern Orchestral Board.
